Art Asylum —
Minimates Action Figure Control Art & Design

Art Direction, Graphic Design, Illustration, Production

Minimates are a block-styled miniature action figure originally created by Art Asylum in 2002 and are currently released by Diamond Select Toys. The basic Minimate figure design has a 2" tall body that resembles an extremely simplified human form with 14 points of articulation, higher than average for block figures.

I begin working with Art Asylum, creating and designing control art primarily for their Minimates line, although I served as a designer on a few other conceptual projects. The Control Art featured turnaround views for every part of the figure that required new tooling and sculpting, the Pantone color breakdowns for every aspect of the figure, and illustrations for any artwork that needed to be applied to the surface of the figure itself. I contributed designs for number of properties including Battlestar Galactica (both Classic and Modern), DC Comics, Doctor Who, Marvel Comics, Marvel Movies, Star Trek, Kelloggs Cereal, and the Rocky Movie Series.

With the "Daggit" character (the robot dog from Battlestar Galactica), I was able to introduce ways Art Asylum could go beyond the "human" form and begin to include 4-legged characters into their line-up. They have since used this approach for various Marvel and Ghostbusters characters, among others.

Being a toy collector since childhood, there was such a rewarding feeling being able to walk into my local comic shop and see these products I helped design being available for others to purchase and enjoy in their own collection.

Created for Art Asylum, 2005-2008.
